A little bit of Spring, TX, an up and coming City just northwest of Houston.
The area of Spring was first inhabited by the Orcoquisac Indians who depended on the lands abundance of fishing and hunting. In the early 1800’s settlers began making their way to the area thus increasing trade and growth. Colonization began to flourish in 1836 after Texas won it’s independence from Mexico. This is also the year that Houston was established along the banks of Buffalo Bayou. In 1845 Texas became part of the US and generous land grants were relatively inexpensive to obtain which stimulated growth in the area. After the Civil War, railroads expanded into south Texas. Spring was named by railroad workers that were laying tracks to the south during a harsh winter. When they reached the area it was Spring time and they were so excited that winter was over that they named it “Camp Spring.” In 1973 “Camp Spring” was platted by I. & G.N. Railroad and became a settlement. “Camp” was eventually dropped from the name and Spring became the base of operation for railroad workers. This created growth for the Lumber Industry and Farmers and created job opportunities for new immigrants. Over next 50 years Spring experienced steady economic growth. During the Economic Depression of the 1930’s, Spring was reduced to a small settlement and stayed dormant until the 1960’s when local merchants started locating around the Spring Cafe to take advantage of economic growth enjoyed by the Oil boom in Houston. Old Town Spring emerged with steady growth of merchants in the 1970’s and 1980’s into a favorite site of customers and visitors from all over the World and is home to several festivals and events including the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival in April. Old Town Spring is voted one of the top attractions of Texas each year.
So to wrap it up, Spring is no longer a small Town, it has blossomed into a City covering 12 zip codes and Old Town Spring is the Heart where the City originated.
